Una aproximació a la gentrificació escolar a Barcelona: mecanismes i implicacions per la política pública
Marcel Pagès, Andreu Termes i Xavier Bonal
Based on the case of Barcelona, the article analyses how processes such as transnational migration and touristification influence school gentrification. The study identifies seven mechanisms that explain this process, linked to school strategies, pro-diversity discourses, social homophily, and the identity reconfiguration of gentrifiers. It concludes with urban and education policy recommendations to reduce the negative effects of school gentrification.

Private schools, gentrification and escape circuits: the case of Barcelona
Sheila González Motos and Xavier Bonal
The article examines how gentrification reshapes private school demand in Barcelona. Using population register data from 2014 to 2023, it analyses families’ opt-out from local public schools. Findings show that private schooling functions as selective exit linked to “white flight”, varying by local context. In gentrifying neighbourhoods, primary-level opt-out is less pronounced, suggesting selective tolerance, while transitions to private secondary schooling remain less constrained.
